Why Finding True Calling Does Not Work
“What do I really want to do when I grow up?” He repeated as a grownup.
He shook his head to wake himself up snapping back to reality where he was working in the “good job” everyone else thought he had. It was the job that he had chosen or was it?
“Ting” He heard the sound from his mobile phone prompting him of the latest “good job” he could apply to.
Without thinking, he clicked on to the link which led him to more job advertisements.
“I heard this company was a mess. Not this company either. It is too small. I want to apply to this one but I’ve never done it before. How about this one? It would have been perfect for me if they don’t require the qualification I don’t have. The job responsibilities of this job sounds very interesting but the work location is too far from my home…” He said to himself as he was browsing through a series of familiar job titles and job descriptions.
“Ting”. He heard another alert prompting the latest news about his idol.
“Sometimes I wish I were my idol…born with all the nature talents…even born knowing the True Calling too I bet.” He mumbled to himself.
“Hey Mr. HR Manager! Have you drafted the job description for the new opening in our Accounting Department?” A sarcastic voice whispered to him from behind as he jerked and concealed what he was looking at.
“Where are those Headhunters when I want them to call me offering me a new job?” He shook his head again before taking out the draft job description he finished two days ago.
And then his phone rang.
Looking to his left and looking to his right, he took the call after allowing it to ring for a few seconds longer.
“Hello?” He said leaving his mouth half-opened with anticipation.
“Hey can we have a quick chat?” The familiar voice revealed it was his manager.
“Sure.” He answered before closing his mouth.
He took the drafted job description and entered his manager’s room.
“It’s nothing personal and we wish you all the best.” His manager said to him before after handing him the redundancy letter.
“You too.” He replied and left showing no emotion.
He returned home seeing the daylight for the first time in years.
Putting the office box on the floor, he was looking for the key to his home’s front door.
He searched for all the places he used to put his key but to no avail.
“You must be joking! I lost my job and then my key!” He spoke finally.
“Where is it? Did I leave it in the office? Was it in the bus? I didn’t even take the bus today. Did I drop it on my way back? But where?” He asked himself trying to contain his emotions.
He went the other way to the office and then back to his home again. Carefully traced back his track, he searched again and again for the places where he had searched before. His key was nowhere to be found.
“Where is my key!” He said.
“Where is my perfect job?” He shouted as he kicked the office box as hard as he could scattering around all his belongings.
A piece of document was thrown in front of him. Instinctively he picked it up before sitting on the floor. It was the drafted job description he forgot to give his manager.
His train of thought was interrupted by the sudden ringing of his mobile phone.
“Hello…” He said to the phone.
It kept ringing. He realized he had not pressed to answer.
“Hello…” He did it right this time.
“Hey it’s me. Let’s celebrate…” was what he could hear before he could no longer proceed more information.
“What! Celebrate?” He replied.
“I’ve just been promoted today!” the person from the other side repeated.
“O…” was all he could utter.
“Where are you now? Still in the office?”
“Office…No. I am at home…I mean I am sitting in front of my front door.”
“What? Why?”
“I lost my…key and have been searching for a long time.”
“Why don’t you just go to the Keysmith?”
“The Keysmith” He repeated before gazing at the drafted job description on his other hand.
He picked up a pen on the floor next to him.
He crossed out the name of his former company on the job description and wrote his name next to it to replace it.
He crossed out the role purpose he wrote for his former company.
He crossed out the job responsibilities he wrote for other people.
“Hello? Are you still there?” the other person said on the phone.
“Yes, I am here. I am so here. Let’s celebrate! But not today as I have more important thing to do now…”
